Create Aesthetic Bullet Journal (Bujo) Spreads with these 8 Simple Tips

Create Aesthetic Bullet Journal (Bujo) Spreads with these 8 Simple Tips

Creating a beautiful bullet journal (or bujo) can bring so much joy to your journaling routine! Here are some practical and easy tips to help you elevate your bujo spreads, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned journaling artist.

1. Pick the Right Journal for Your Style
Choosing the right journal is key! If you’re focusing on writing, opt for lined pages to keep text neat. For a more artistic journal, dot-grid pages allow for flexible designs without constraining creativity.

Consider the paper’s thickness, too—sketches and watercolor work best on thicker paper, while 80-100gsm paper is perfect for everyday writing. Size also matters - A6 pocket notebooks are ideal for portability, B6 offers a bit more space while staying compact, and A5 provides a generous canvas for detailed spreads.

Finding a journal that matches your style and needs will make the creative process smoother and more enjoyable.

2. Decide on a Color Scheme Before Starting
Selecting a cohesive color scheme can set the tone for your spread. If you’re new to color matching, try sticking to no more than two colors for a clean, harmonious look. Use your chosen colors for highlighters, markers, and other design elements throughout your spread for a balanced, professional feel.

3. Experiment with Creative Header Techniques
Headers are an easy way to add style to your pages. From brush lettering to simple hand-drawn frames, picking a fun header style can tie your theme together and make each page pop.

4. Use a Ruler for Precision
If freehand lines aren’t your strong suit, a ruler is your best friend! Using one for borders and tables creates a polished, crisp look. Don’t worry; there’s no shame in relying on a ruler to keep your lines straight. Precision can really enhance the aesthetic appeal of your spreads.

5. Highlight First, Write Later
Avoid smudging by highlighting key areas before you write. It may seem minor, but this little habit keeps your spreads neat and saves you time going back over details. Try highlighting titles, to-do lists, or quotes to make your spread vibrant and visually organized.

6. Add Depth with Sticky Notes and Scrap Paper
Add a three-dimensional element by incorporating sticky notes, scrap paper, or torn notepad pieces. This technique gives your layout a layered effect and adds an engaging, tactile quality to the spread. Experiment with colors and textures to create eye-catching layouts.

7. Use Glue Tape for a Cleaner Look
Traditional glue can sometimes be messy; glue tape offers a neater alternative for sticking down photos, paper elements, or journaling cards. It’s easy to apply, dries instantly, and keeps your spread looking clean and well-crafted. Once you try glue tape, you’ll wonder how you managed without it!

8. Accent with Washi Tapes and Stickers
Bring your bujo spread to life with washi tape and stickers! These small decorative elements make it easy to add accents and complete the look of your pages. Use washi tape to create borders, frame sections, or secure your loose paper scraps, and apply stickers for an extra pop of colour.
